



Coach Matt Small is beginning his first year as head coach at Great Bridge High School. Previously he coached at Frank W. Cox High School were his 2010-2011 wrestling team finished with the Beach District and Eastern Regional titles and a runner-up finish in the Virginia AAA State Tournament. In 2009-2010, Coach Small lead the Cox Falcons to their first AAA state title in 24 years. During his two years at Cox he has coached 8 state champions, 2 state finalists, and multiple place winners, compiling a 27-4 dual meet record. Prior to Cox, Matt spent two years as Head wrestling coach at the newly established Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, Virginia where he complied a 33-9 dual meet record coaching 2 state champions and his team finished 4th in the 2009 AAA State Tournament in just the second year of the schools existence. Matt began his coaching career in 2000 as an assistant at his alma mater, Great Bridge High, where he helped coach Great Bridge to state championships from 2000 - 2005 under Steve and Wayne Martin.
Matt graduated from Great Bridge High School and was an All-State wrestler at 189 lbs under coach Steve Martin. Matt attended Gloucester Community College in New Jersey and was the Mid-Atlantic Zone Conference Champion and a Junior College National Qualifier at 197 lbs and also an Academic All-American. He later attended Old Dominion University where he wrestled under Grey Simons and was a 2002 Colonial Athletic Association Runner-Up at 184 lbs, finished 2nd in the Virginia Collegiate State Tournament and was Co-Captain of the Wrestling Team. He graduated from Old Dominion University Cum Laude. Matt is also one of the Head Clinicians at the Martin’s Granby School of Wrestling and a Virginia National Freestyle Team Coach.
Coach Neumann wrestled for Western Branch High School in Chesapeake for two years before moving to Great Bridge to wrestle under Coach Martin his junior and senior years. He was part of the AAA Virginia State Championship Teams his freshman, junior and senior years. Neumann placed fourth in the state tournament as a junior and third as a senior.
Coach Neumann worked as an assistant to Coach Jason Otley, leading Great Bridge Middle School (GBMS) to two City Championships. After becoming head coach at GBMS, Neumann continued the winning streak with two more City Championships and added two Middle School State Championships to his coaching resume. The streak is now seven (7) consecutive Middle School Tournament City Championships for GBMS.
Coach Neumann is a teacher at GBMS.
Started wrestling in the Great Bridge Program at age 9. Wrestled at Great Bridge Middle School for Coach Paul Clavel (now the assistant coach at Blair Academy). Lettered at Great Bridge High School for Coach Steve Martin. A member of 3 Virginia State title teams. Member of the number one ranked public school in the nation in 2002. A Virginia freestyle state place winner. Worked as an assistant coach to P.J. Neumann at Great Bridge Middle in 2008-2009 winning the City and State tournament.
Head coach for Great Bridge Middle in 2009-2010. Regular season city champions, 8 wrestlers in the city finals with 5 champions. Coached the first 6th grade city champion in Chesapeake’s history. Placed 2nd at the state tournament with 3 state champions and 12 wrestlers placing in the top 6.
Currently working for Chesapeake Public Schools and attending Old Dominion University.
Coach Rogers was a four-year varsity wrestler at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake Va under the Martin regime. Coach Rogers had an impressive high school career as a three-time district champ, regional champ and state champion. He also placed second at freestyle nationals and second at the prestigious Super 32 National tournament. He continued his passion for wrestling as an assistant coach for Moyock Middle School and Pee Wee’s. In addition, he was assistant head coach at Hickory High school.
Rogers is delighted to return to the sport of wrestling as the Great Bridge Wrestling Pee Wee Head Coach.
