High School Coach
Matt Small

Coach Matt Small graduated from Great Bridge High School and was an All-State wrestler at 189 lbs under coach Steve Martin. Matt attended Gloucester Community College in New Jersey and was the Mid-Atlantic Zone Conference Champion and a Junior College National Qualifier at 197 lbs and also an Academic All-American. He later attended Old Dominion University where he wrestled under Grey Simons and was a 2002 Colonial Athletic Association Runner-Up at 184 lbs, finished 2nd in the Virginia Collegiate State Tournament and was Co-Captain of the Wrestling Team. He graduated from Old Dominion University Cum Laude. Matt is also one of the Head Clinicians at the Martin’s Granby School of Wrestling and a Virginia National Freestyle Team Coach.

Matt began his coaching career in 2000 as an assistant at his alma mater, Great Bridge High, where he helped coach Great Bridge to state championships from 2000 – 2005 under Steve and Wayne Martin.

Matt spent two years as Head wrestling coach at the newly established Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, Virginia where he compiled a 33-9 dual meet record coaching 2 state champions and his team finished 4th in the 2009 AAA State Tournament in just the second year of the school’s existence.

From 2009-2011, he coached at Frank W. Cox High School and led the Cox Falcons to their first AAA State Title in 24 years. During his two years at Cox he has coached 12 state champions, 3 state finalists, 6 All-Americans and multiple state place winners.

Coach Small returned to his Alma Mater in 2011 to continue the great wrestling tradition of pride and excellence at Great Bridge High School. Great Bridge has crowned 4 Virginia State Champions under Coach Small’s leadership.

Youth and Middle School Coach
PJ Neumann

Coach Neumann wrestled for Western Branch High School in Chesapeake for two years before moving to Great Bridge to wrestle under Coach Martin his junior and senior years. He was part of the AAA Virginia State Championship Teams his freshman, junior and senior years. Neumann placed fourth in the state tournament as a junior and third as a senior.

Coach Neumann began working as an assistant coach, leading Great Bridge Middle School to two City Championships. After becoming head coach at GBMS, Neumann continued the winning streak with two more City Championships and added two Middle School State Championships to his coaching resume in his first year. The Middle School Wildcats are the back to back Chesapeake City Champions. Last year, Coach Neumann and the Wildcats went undefeated with a perfect season and crowned 6 Individual City Champions.

Coach Neumann has also been an Assistant Coach at Great Bridge High School. He has also been instrumental in providing off-season training and competition opportunities for year-round wrestlers for Middle School and High School wrestlers.

Coach Neumann is a teacher at GBMS.

Youth Club Coach
Christian Basnight

Coach Basnight graduated from Great Bridge High School and was the 1996 State Champion at 171 lbs. under coach Steve Martin. The 96 Wildcat team was ranked 10th in the nation and he was awarded GBHS Most Valuable Athlete. Basnight won both a cadet and junior state championships in freestyle and was part of the cadet nationals team in 1994. He was also a 3-year letterman in Football.

Chris attended Virginia Tech and was a 4-year letterman under coach Keith Mourlam. In 2000 he was the VT team captain, won the Virginia Collegiate State Tournament and was fourth in the EWL wrestling conference at 197 lbs. He was awarded the VT Outstanding Senior Award in 2000. He is also a member of the VT Monogram Club.

Basnight began his coaching career in 2014 as a part-time assistant under PJ at the middle school level.

Coach Basnight returned to his Alma Mater in 2017 to continue the great wrestling tradition of pride and excellence that Great Bridge Wrestling in known for.

Christian Basnight is also a Youth Tackle Football Coach, GBHS Football Booster Club President, as well as a cub scout den leader. In 2016, he was awarded the Service to Youth Award by the YMCA. He is supported by his lovely wife Erin and three wonderful kids. He owns a local construction company and has very strong ties to the local community.
