Great Bridge finished the 2010/2011 season by sending 6 athletes to the State Tournament. Four of the GB wrestlers (all seniors) came home with All-State honors. 82 of Virginia’s 129 AAA schools were represented. Great Bridge finished the stste tournament tied for 9th place with Kellam.
GB Individual performances:
Eric Merriam (E3) earned his berth in the big dance as a freshman. Eric had a tough first round draw against eventual State finalist Sean Badua (NW2) of Osburn Park. Eric came back to win the first round of wrestle backs but dropped his second round consolation match to a very tough Hunter Manley (N2). We expect to see a lot more of Eric Merriam in his next 3 years.
Austin Hurst (E1) once again is an All State wrestler, finishing 4th. Austin won his way to the semi final round but dropped the match to eventual state champion Jake Smith (N1) of Robinson. Austin then defeated Ocean Lakes Eddie Bracy (E2) in the consolation semi finals. Austin dropped a match with injury default in the consolations finals to Dennis Gus (NW1) to finish 4th.
Johnny McClanahan (E4) is once again an All State wrestler. Johnny won his way to the semi finals by defeating Dakota Thompson (NW1) and Omar Maknass (N2) in the first and second round seed but dropped the semi’s match to CJ Jablonsky (E1) of Cox. After three very tough matches in the championship bracket, Johnny tightened the boots and came back and wrestled tough to finish his senior year as a 2 x All State wrestler, finishing 6th.
Chris Mansfield (E3) was on the podium as an All State wrestler finishing 5th. Chris won his first match but then lost the second round to Will Hays (C1). Chris then won his next match against MJ Robinson (C2) of Hermitage and beat Eure (E4) of Cox in the consolation quarters. Chris then dropped a heart breaking 1-0 match against Ketcher (E1). Chris came back to win a 5th place finish against Garcia (NW2) of Osbourn.
Brandon Smith (E2) finished his senior year with All State honors, finishing 5th. Brandon won his first round match but lost his second round to Ryan Forest (N1). Brandon then came back and won his next two matches but dropped the consolations semi’s match to Alex Turley (C1). Brandon came back to win 5th against Zakeel Muha (C2). Brandon went on to be awarded the 2011 MVP by the GB coaches for his leadership and never give up work ethic.
Jordan Jones (E4) also made it to the big dance. Jordan wrestled well but dropped a couple of tough matches back to back. The good news is Jordan will return next year and State Tournament experience could pay big dividends in his senior year. We expect to see Jordan on the podium at next year’s state tournament.
